Who you see in Sunset Park: Frank the Cobbler

Frank the Cobbler: Sunset Park, originally uploaded by carnade.
Big shout out to carnade for adding some excellent portraits to the SsPk flickr pool.

Here is one I felt captured the local cobbler, Frank. I have been taking my shoes to get taps, fix zippers, change heels, and stretch leather for a little over 10 years. He is inexpensive and reliable. Just make sure to ask about his hours!

Frank's Shoe repair is on 5th ave between 45th and 46th street.

What you see in Sunset Park: Empty Branches

dusk, originally uploaded by bdwac.
After a wonderfully productive 2nd half of the year, Sunset Park Stills is back. Thanks to all that still added to the group. As most know, blogs are free and don't pay so when paid work comes, one should not say no, even when photography is a passion :D

I thought this image was a wonderful addition and a nice lead in to the new season. Enjoy.

What you see in Sunset Park, Brooklyn: Una Carta

Una Carta, originally uploaded by veesvision.
veesvision is me. I shoot the little altars and saints around the neighborhood. Recently, I have begun shooting the alters and saints where ever I see them.

Why? Well, I have been asking myself that very question. At first it was an observation. I would see an altar and think about how the owner must be an ultra conservative and religious person. I'd shoot the little statues and collect them in my mind. Then sort them into neat piles of files in my computer's hard drive.

After interviewing some of the owners and neighbors, I quickly realized the significance of each one. Editing the images at home also played a part in my intrigue. Where they really all that religious? Or perhaps superstitious...

Being a bit superstitious myself, I have come to understand and more importantly, respect each and every altar and saint that I shoot.

I have always been fascinated by superstitions. Those that know me, know I may not remember your birthday, but I remember your astrological sign and it's attributes.

Sunset Park 911 Tribute

Sunset Park 911 Tribute, originally uploaded by Michael Comeau.
This image was shot last year by Michael Comeau.

Where were you on this day 9 years ago?

I was on the Manhattan Bridge D train. Saw the horrific event front and center. There isn't a day that goes by when on that line, I don't think about what I saw that Tuesday morning...

May they all rest in peace.

This barber shop isn't really a barber shop. It's where the ice cream carts live.

Dominican Day Parade

DR-DAY, originally uploaded by veesvision.
So today was the Dominican day parade. I may have missed that tweet but I couldn't ignore the music. My curiosity got the better of me - I followed the sounds. Once I reached the source, on the corner of 45th and 6th ave, I readied my iphone. Everyone was having a great time dancing, drinking and wearing the flag. It was a stoop party.

What I saw in Sunset Park, Brooklyn: Planet Brooklyn

Planet Brooklyn, originally uploaded by veesvision.
56th street and 6th ave

There was a "TV is bad for the brain" thing up for a while. It's too bad I missed the window on shooting that. The good news is, this one is full of color and graphics. I had a lot of fun pushing colors in post production.

What you see in Sunset Park, Brooklyn: RESURRECTION CHURCH

RESURRECTION CHURCH, originally uploaded by how_long_it_takes.
Where in the heck world is that ? !

I know, I know. It looks so out of place against the 99 cent stores and ice cream carts but this is a real building with a real yard and real grass. Wanna see? Take a walk around 41st between 7th and 8th avenues.

Shot by  how long it takes. Take a look at their Flickr page if you are familiar with the 5 boroughs. Try to guess where the other picture places are.

What I saw in Sunset Park, Brooklyn: A Zany Circus

The Zanny Circus was in SsPk, originally uploaded by veesvision.
Every Wednesday during the summer in Sunset Park, there is usually a some sort of performance. Today it was The Zany Umbrella Circus. The crowd was huge! The performers incorporated a lot of typical circus acts from juggling fire wands to walking on a tight rope. One performer even hung from long red ribbons suspended in the sky.

Do you have an image you'd like to share? Add it to the Sunset Park Stills Flickr Pool.

Where to find Lucha Libre Masks

Lucha Libre Wrestler Masks, originally uploaded by veesvision.
Well, there are several places here in Sunset Park to find variations of Lucha Libre Masks. These were shot on 5th ave somewhere between 60 and 63rd streets. I have seen a few places on 5th between 40th street and 63rd selling them. But you gotta come here to get them.

How to get here? This part of Sunset Park is off of the N and R lines; stations 45th street and 53rd street will get you to the Latino part of town (5th ave).

Hopefully B.I.D. will host another summer event. That's when I shot this.

Summer is also time for visitors. Visitors, equals parties... parties and weddings. Love the view point of this shot! It has inspired me to go out and "shop" for dresses myself.
